Routine Surgical Specimens

Tissues for routine pathology examination/diagnosis typically include excised tissues such as Appendix, Bladder, Bone, Breast biopsy, Cervix, Colon, Cyst, Soft tissue, Endometrium, Fallopian tube, Fascia, Foreskin, Gallbladder, Hemorrhoids, Herniasac, Hydrocele, Kidney, Lesions, Lipoma, Liver, Lung, Ovary, Pilonidal Sinus, Polyps, Prostate, Salivary Gland, Skin, Spermatocele, Spleen,Temporal arteries, Testis, Thyroid, Tonsil/Adenoid, Uterus, Varicose Vein, and Vasdeferens.

  • Specimens for routine pathologic evaluation must be submitted in 10% neutral buffered formalin. Please select the most appropriate size of container for the specimen so that the ratio of tissue to formalin is at least 1:15, this is key for proper fixation and subsequent testing. Ensure the container lids are securely tightened to eliminate leakage.
  • Be certain that small specimens do not get caught in the lid or on the side of the container, where they can dry out. Specimens are not to be submitted on woven gauze material due to the risk of potential specimen loss.
  • A margin can be identified with a suture. Tie the suture loosely for easy removal.
  • If clinically significant, the specimen should be oriented with a suture to identify one landmark e.g. "12:00". Indicate sutured apex or margin on the request form.
  • For cases involving re-excision include patient history, the previous surgical number, and diagnosis.

     Direct Immunofluorescent Studies

  • Tissue for direct immunofluorescent studies (IF or DIF), must be submitted in Zeus  (or Michel’s) transport media immediately after collection. To order vials containing transport media contact the laboratory.
