Hematopathology

Bone Marrow collection is essential for the diagnosis of some hematological disorders. Often, there is a need to order flow cytometry, cytogenetics, molecular testing, and cultures requiring additional samples to be collected at the same time.

Specimen Requirements:

  • Routine Evaluation (Histology and Immunohistochemistry)
  • Bone marrow aspirate/clot: place in B-FIX fixative (specimen must clot first, then into fixative)
  • Bone marrow biopsy: place in B-FIX fixative
  • BoneMarrow smears: 4-6 air-dried
  • Peripheral blood smears: 2 air-dried
  • Peripheral blood: collect in EDTA tube (purple top)
  • CBC report

Special Studies

Cytogenetics, Flow Cytometry, TargetGene Analysis, FISH panels, or single assays:

Requires a BM aspirate submitted in NaHeparin (green top tube) minimum of 1 ml BM aspirate per test

(If a BM biopsy sample must be tested, it should be placed in RPMI media. A bone marrow biopsy should only be submitted if no aspirate material is available.)

JAK2or other PCR studies:

Requires peripheral blood in EDTA (purple top) tube 1-2 ml
