Medical Cytology

The Cytopathology department provides routine screening and diagnostic cytopathology services, for non-gynecologic cytology including pulmonary, gastrointestinal, body cavity fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, and fine-needle aspiration biopsy interpretation. Special studies, including flow cytometry and immunocytochemical studies, can also be performed on cytologic specimens.

All Non-Gyn Medical Cytology specimens are to be preserved in CytoLyt® fixative. Cytology specimens must be adequately preserved to be acceptable. Make sure that the specimen is for cytology ONLY. If other tests are requested, DO NOT ADD FIXATIVE. This may distort test results.

Prefilled tubes are provided for cytology collection.

  • Urine Specimen Collection vials contain 10 ml of CytoLyt® fixative.
  • Vials for all other specimen types contain 30 ml of CytoLyt® fixative.
