REQUIREMENTS FOR PATHOLOGY SPECIMENS POLICY:
Each specimen container must be labeled to include patient’s full name and source. Complete a pathology requisition form and forward with the specimen(s).

Call the laboratory immediately if you should have any questions

Specimen Type

 

Available Analysis

Specimen Requirements

 

Bladder Washings

 

DNA analysis (Flow cytometry)

Submit 150-200 ml of wash fluid in a sterile container. DO NOT ADD FIXATIVE.

 

Bone Marrow

 

DNA analysis,
Leukemia/Lymphoma phenotyping,
Cytogenetic studies

 

Submit one sodium heparin tube (1-2 ml)

 

Bone Marrow Clot & Biopsy

 

Light microscopy
Reticulum stains

Submit in B-5 fixative
Submit in 10% formalin

 

Fine Needle Aspiration

 

Leukemia/Lymphoma evaluation,
DNA analysis
Light microscopy

Submit total contents of aspirate (minimum 250,000 cells). DO NOT PLACE IN ANY OTHER SOLUTION.
Submit total contents into CytoLyt preservative.

 

 

Lymph Node

 

Flow cytometry,
DNA analysis,
B&T cell receptor gene rearrangement (clonality)

 

Wrap specimen in a saline-soaked gauze. DO NOT ADD FIXATIVE. DO NOT IMMERSE THE SPECIMEN IN A CONTAINER OF SALINE.

 

Muscle Biopsy

 

Electron microscopy,
Immunofluorescent studies,
Enzyme histochemistry

 

Specimen should be at least 2 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm. Wrap muscle in saline moistened gauze to prevent tissue from drying out. DO NOT IMMERSE IN SALINE.

 

Myocardial Biopsy

Light microscopy

Submit at least five (5) biopsies in 10% Formalin. IMMEDIATE FIXATION REQUIRED.

 

Nerve Biopsy

Electron microscopy, Immunofluorescence, Localization of antibodies

Stretch a fresh core (approx. 3-5 cm in length) gently on an index card. Place saline moistened gauze on top to prevent nerve from drying out. DO NOT IMMERSE IN SALINE.


 

Peripheral Blood

Leukemia/Lymphoma Evaluation/DNA analysis/Cytogenetics

Submit 5-10 whole blood collected in sodium heparin anti-coagulated tube AND one (1) EDTA anti-coagulated tube (lavender). Submit 5-10 ml whole blood collected in sodium heparin anti-coagulated tube. Submit 5-20 ml whole blood collected in sodium heparin anti-coagulated tube. Blast count should be at least 20%.

 

Renal Biopsy

Electron microscopy, Immunofluorescent studies, Light microscopy, Electron microscopy

Wrap specimen in a saline soaked gauze. DO NOT ADD FIXATIVE.

 

Skin/Mucosa

Immunofluorescence

Transport media-(Zeus or Michel’s media)

 

Tissue

Routine surgical pathology-gross/microscopic examination

Submit specimen in 10% formalin

 

Fresh Tissue

Frozen Section/Touch Preps

Submit fresh tissue. DO NOT ADD FIXATIVE OR FLUID

 

Tumor Tissue (Fresh)

DNA analysis, Leukemia/Lymphoma phenotyping, B&T cell gene rearrangement, Flow cytometry, Immunoperoxidase

Submit at least 0.5 grams of fresh tumor in a saline soaked gauze. DO NOT PLACE TISSUE IN ANY FIXATIVE.

 

Vitreous Fluid-eye

PCR-toxoplasmosis, HSV/CMV/H. Zoster

Specimen should be sent STERILE & FRESH—DO NOT ADD FIXATIVE.
