What is a Cytotechnologist?
Cytotechnology is the study of cells and the cytotechnologist is an individual who is trained to recognize abnormalities in size, shape, color and patterns of the cells. These cells come from pap smears, sputum, urine, fine needle aspirations and other body cavity fluids. The cytotechnologist will diagnose the cell samples which is then confirmed by a pathologist. Cytotechnologists usually have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in cytotechnology. They also must pass a board certification test with the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Yearly continuing education is an additional requirement and important in the cytotechnologist career to stay current on new technologies.
